JACK BLIZZARD

One of my favorite pastimes is flipping through old pages, hunting for hidden treasures in forgotten encyclopedias, dated magazines, or dusty travel books. There’s something undeniably captivating about the quirkiness within: the faded colors and textures left by an offset printing press, or the charm of a character, unwittingly timeless and iconic.

All my work is made completely from used or upcycled materials. Creating art from used and repurposed media is not just a creative challenge; it is an act of resistance against wasteful modern consumption habits.

Each of these unwanted, used materials holds a history, a story of its previous life.
The way I view my work is like catching up with a best mate you haven’t seen in years. You want to tell them something funny that happened, but there are lots of little detailed tangents, distracting and bizarre by themselves, yet necessary to build the whole narrative. Like every Yorkshireman, I enjoy few things more than swapping stories that lend themselves to a daft sense of humor, poking fun at situations and stumbling into punchlines.

Collage provides a way of freely giving form to storytelling through a strange mix of both scrutinous hunting and silly openness to improvisation. One way to describe the process is like solving a puzzle that you’re making up along the way.
